Pediatric Possibilities

If a patient will not or cannot swallow we can change drugs into liquids, lollipops, lozenges, gelatin troches (chewable) or mouthwashes. Our formulas are allergy-free, dye-free, gluten-free and preservative-free.

Another option is the transdermal gel, which avoids gastrointestinal absorption and is easier to administer: no pills to swallow or shots to give. This minimizes side effects and reduces drug interactions.

Metronidazole that tastes good

We make solutions of an equivalent dose with Metronidazole Benzoate that is virtually tasteless. We flavor this with any flavor of the patients choice.

Flavor choices include: bubblegum, cherry, lemon creme, banana creme, caramel, tutti-frutti, strawberry, vanilla butternut, chocolate and many others!

Cholestyramine Ointment for Diaper Rash

Cholestyramine (Questran) resin is incorporated in an ointment base as an absorbent and protectorant in diaper rash.

Xylitol for prevention of recurrent otitis media

Xylitol can be helpful in decreasing the incidence of otitis media in children. It can be given as a sugar (1/4 tsp. 2 to 5 times per day) or chewing gum. (Uhari M, Terp K, Marjo J, et al. A novel use of xylitol sugar in preventing acute otitis media. Pediatrics 1998:162:879-884). Xylitol is a sweetener (a sugar alcohol) that occurs naturally in fruit, berries, vegetables, mushrooms, and in human tissues. It is important also for prevention of dental caries.

BROADWAY APOTHECARY, INC. carries xylitol sugar, xylitol gum and xylitol mints.

Medicated Lollipops

We make tetracaine lollipops for sore mouths and throats. These need to be used with care and supervised by parents or caregivers. The anesthetic lollipops stay in the mouth only 30 seconds at a time. Other medications that can be put in a lollipop include: nystatin, acyclovir, dextromethorphan, morphine, metoclopramide, and many others. Just ask! We use sugar-free, sorbital candy.

"Lice-End" is effective for head lice

Our "Lice-End" spray for head lice contains ylang-ylang, anise oil, coconut oil, tea tree oil and isopropyl alcohol. Directions are to spray on dry hair, saturate hair, massage in well - leave on 15 minutes, then wash, rinse, comb with nit comb.

All-purpose nipple ointment

This ointment is used for yeast and infection that can develop from breastfeeding. It contains equal parts of Bactroban, nystatin, chlotrimazole 1%, and betamethasone (optional) ointments. APNO is applied to nipples after breastfeeding and is not washed off between feedings.
