Homeopathy
HomeopathyThe fundamental basis of homeopathy, founded by Samuel Hahnemann, is "like cures like." If taking a particular substance induces a certain range of symptoms, similar to those of a disease, that substance, in homeopathic form, may provide a cure for that particular disease. Homeopathy's three "Laws of Cure" are:
First LawThe human body seeks to externalize disease. The homeopath, consequently, is pleased to see an outbreak of (for example) eczema, as evidence not that the disease is worsening, but that the condition is responding to treatment. This contrasts markedly with the approach of traditional medicine, which often treats symptoms and neglects the underlying disease process.
Second LawHealing progresses from the top of the body downwards. The homeopathic physician will observe that, as healing takes place, head, or upper body conditions ameliorate before those in the lower body.
Third LawHealing proceeds in reverse chronological order. Afflictions that are an early symptom of disease will often reassert themselves as the disease is driven out of the body.
PreparationsHomeopathic medicines were officially recognized by the FDA in 1938 as approved drugs. All official preparations are listed in the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States. These medicines classically are in the form of pellets (tiny beads) although liquids (tinctures), as well as tablets, ointments, and suppositories are also popular. Pellets (made of sucrose, lactose, or both) and liquids are usually administered sublingually, to take advantage of the rich blood supply in the mouth.
