Compounding

Compounding pharmacists provide unique drug products to their patients. Compounding is often medically essential and allows pharmacists to tailor the strength and dosage form of a medication according to patient needs. This may be including the active drug in a troche, preparing a desired drug or drug strength that isn't commercially available, changing a dosage form from oral preparation to rectal suppository or topical penetrating cream, adding or deleting flavors, or compounding a dye-free or preservative-free medication. There are also needs for medications that may not be commercially available, and that may not have good stability and therefore require frequent preparation. Compounding pharmacists are problem-solvers in your community who complete the triad of physician, patient, and pharmacist to gain positive outcomes for the patient.

Compounding pharmacy can enhance virtually all areas of medicine including natural hormone replacement therapy, children's dosage forms and flavors, capsule and suppository preparations, dermatology specialties, transdermal paste, vaginal suppositories and creams, hospice formulations, lip balms, medicated troches, and specialized low-stability preparations for asthma and eye and ear problems.

Compounding is inherent in pharmacy practice. No other health care professional has studied chemical compatibilities and can prepare dosage forms. It is the birthright of the profession, and the practice of preparing medications dates back to biblical times. The role of an apothecary or chemist was diminished by the advent in the 1950s and 1960s of manufactured pre-made prescription products. Today more and more, physicians, practitioners, and patients are realizing the benefits of individualized or unique dosage forms for specific patient needs.
